GRAFT COMPATİBİLİTY BETWEEN TWO CUT ROSE CULTİVARS AND A DOGROSE (ROSA CANİNA L.) ROOTSTOCK

Authors:   D. Hazar, I. Baktır
Keywords:   anatomy, grafting, graft union, incompatibility, propagation, scion variety
Abstract:
Scion-rootstock compatibility and the anatomical structure of the graft union was studied in the scion varieties ‘Jacaranda’ and ‘Kardinal’ grafted on the rootstock R. canina (dogrose). Horizontal and vertical wood samples, cut from the graft union, were stained with methylene blue, safranin and lugol (IKI). All samples were studied under trinocular microscope in addition to macroscopic studies. ‘Jacaranda’ had a very good graft compatibility with R. canina, whereas ‘Kardinal’ had only a medium good compatibility. Starch accumulation was detected on R. canina in the ‘Kardinal’/R. canina graft combination. This situation was assumed to be the main reason for a decrease in the nutrient transfer between scion and rootstock. In each of the two graft combinations, xylem and cambium tissues were continuous in the graft union. Shoot growth was good in both ‘Jacaranda’ and ‘Kardinal’ soon after grafting.
