ISHS Acta Horticulturae 69: II International Symposium on Pear Growing

PROPAGATION OF PYRUS BETULAEFOLIA BUNGE BY STEM CUTTING

Authors:   F. Loreti, S. Morini
Abstract:
Trials were carried out in order to study rooting ability of some clones of the pear rootstock, Pyrus betulaefolia. Cuttings, collected from mother plants in the juvenile stage were propagated with bottom heat and mist propagation techniques. Hardwood cuttings treated with 3 000 ppm IBA and placed in 21°C beds rooted poorly; maximum rooting did not exceed 16%.

Softwood cuttings propagated under mist gave more satisfactory results. Six different concentrations of IBA were tested; best rooting (85–95%) and highest number of roots per cuttings resulted from 3 000 and 4 500 ppm IBA treatments. A wide variation in percentage of rooted cuttings was observed among the clones and from year to year within clones. A few clones rooted more uniformly in the 3 years of testing.
