Abstract:
On the basis of twelve years investigations the quite complex relationship found among pear scion, interstem and quince rootstock, makes us unable to generalize the results get.
However, the influence of 34 intermediates on the growth and on the fruiting behaviour of four pear varieties on Quince A, has been remarkable.
The physical and morphological characters of the fruits have been also evaluated.
Among the scion varieties, Clapp's Favourite showed both a wide suitability to a great amount of graft combinations and promoted a great productivity; William, Beurré Bosc and Anjou generally showed a very poor growth (the former) or a low yield (the latters).
Some intermediate showed a high degree of incompatibility either with quince, or with scion or with both (f.i.
Beurré Giffard, Coscia, Dr.
J. Guyot, Laxton's Superb, Starkrimson, William), although the yield efficiency of the trees in some cases (f.i., B.L. d'Avranches and Epine du Mas) has been very high.
Several interstock varieties gave, on the whole, fairly good results (A. Fétel, Comice, Beurré Clairgeau, Beurré Hardy, Passe Crassane, Precoce d'Altedo) or even very satisfactory results (B.P. Morettini, B. Espéren, Conference, Gentile bianca, P. Trevoux, Santa Maria, W.P. Morettini).
In conclusion it appears that the best intermediates are not always those having the greater rate of compatibility with quince (f.i., Curé and Beurré Hardy), and that double-working can be applied both to overcome the lack of compatibility between scion and quince, and to produce more efficient trees.
