ARGENTINE GARLIC II: THE NEED OF DIFFERENT CROPPING AND POST-HARVEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AMONG CULTIVARS

Abstract:
The Garlic Project of INTA Experiment Station La Consulta (Mendoza, Argentina) has released 12 clonal cultivars, which highly improve yield potential and quality of the Argentine garlic. Besides all of them have temperate or cold-temperate requirements, the cultivars show important differences in field and post-harvest responses to certain management practices. Optimum planting dates vary from the midsummer (Morado INTA) to the fall (Castaņo INTA), in a whole planting period of about 60 days. The best clove size for planting also varies significantly, according to the cultivar and the clove shape. By growing two or more of those cultivars, taking advantage of their different earliness, the optimum timing for harvest could be extended from a harvest period of 7 days to a period of 50 days. Post-harvest conservation varies from 4 to 8 months under natural conditions (in Morado INTA and Sureņo INTA respectively), and from 1 to 11 months under cold conditions (in Lican INTA and Castaņo INTA respectively, at 0-2°C). The differences among cultivars, in addition to the strong clone-environment interaction, imply that each clone needs its particular crop management, and allow Argentine growers to have many alternatives to get the best benefits from their economic and technical resources.
