Abstract:
Twenty-four garlic ecotypes collected from main cultivation areas of Iran, were evaluated for genetic variation of some morphological and agronomical characteristics. This study has been conducted along 2002-2003 in a field study, using complete randomized block design with three replications. The investigated characteristics included yield, mean bulb weight, mean clove weight, clove number, plant height, leaf number, leaf length and presence or absence of floral stem. Analysis of variance showed that garlic ecotypes with different origins were significantly different for all characteristics, except clove number. The results of stepwise regression indicated that 65% of variation in yield is explained by leaf number and bulb mean weight. Therefore, leaf number and bulb mean weight are important characteristics, which could help us in garlic selection program and improvement of yield.
