Abstract:
I introduce several topics on persimmon research which we have dealt with at the pomology lab at Kyoto University in the past thirty years.
The topic titles are as follows: (I) Persimmon and its relatives, (II) Cultivar differentiation of persimmon – astringency and non-astringency, and cultivar identification, (III) Natural loss of astringency of persimmon fruit on the tree, (IV) Biotechnology of persimmon – shoot tip culture for mass propagation, callus and protoplast cultures for establishing regeneration systems, and anther and endosperm cultures, (V) Novel strategies for persimmon breeding – ploidy manipulation, genetic transformation, and marker- assisted breeding, (VI) Physiology of fruit development and ripening – roles of calyx lobes in fruit growth and development, and effect of temperature on fruit growth and ripening, and (VII) Cold hardiness of persimmon buds.
In the concluding remarks, I emphasize the importance of conservation and utilization of persimmon germplasms.
