Abstract:
‘Luotiantianshi’ persimmon has existed for nearly one thousand years as the major cultivar in many areas in Hubei, Henan and Anhui provinces in China.
The cultivar is non-astringent persimmon native to China.
At present, four trees older than 250 years exist.
From a recent survey on the native persimmons, ‘Tianbaogai’, ‘Qiuyan’, ‘Sifangtianshi’ and ‘Xiaoguotianshi’ cultivars were found in a narrow band between Ba River and Ju River at the south of Dabie mountains in Hubei province.
These cultivars are less than 50 years old and grown only in a few planting areas.
All of these Chinese origin non-astringent persimmons belong to pollination constant non-astringent (PCNA) types.
However, their tannin cells were quite different from those of Japanese native non-astringent persimmon; they rather show similar performance to astringent persimmon.
Hence, it is thought that Chinese native non-astringent persimmon is mutated from astringent persimmon under specific climatic conditions that are propitious for tannin coagulation.
This mutation might have transformed an astringent into a non-astringent type persimmon.
