Abstract:
Seven scab resistant apple cultivars (‘Freedom’, ‘Ecolette’, ‘Free Redstar’, ‘Melfree’, ‘Redkroft’, ‘Medea’ and ‘Sawa’) were investigated.
The trees were planted in the spring of 1995 on M.26 rootstock.
The quality parameters of the fruits (weight, percentage of blush, total soluble solids, titratable acidity and flesh firmness) were measured at harvest time, after storage, and shelf life.
Additionally, at harvest, starch index and internal ethylene concentration were measured.
After storage (three months at +2°C, 85-90% RH) and shelf life (seven days at +18°C) the incidences of storage disorders and diseases were assessed.
Titratable acidity and total soluble solids at harvest and after storage of the studied cultivars depended on the vegetative season.
The apples of ‘Freedom’ and ‘Melfree’ cultivars were susceptible to superficial scald.
Soft scald and core browning were observed on ‘Melfree’ apples.
The fruits of the studied cultivars can be stored for at least three months at +2°C. ‘Free Redstar’ and ‘Sawa’ seem to be the most promising new scab resistant Polish cultivars.
