Abstract:
In order to verify the diffusion of viruses in late artichoke varieties (“Romanesco” and analogous micropropagated cultivars), field surveys, from late autumn to early summer, were carried out in the most important areas devoted to artichoke cultivation in Latium region (Central Italy).
Different syndromes were observed: mottling and yellowing more or less diffuse on the blades, lea malformations and stunting of the plants.
The yield from symptomatic plants was reduced.
The symptoms appeared in September and increased during the vegetative growing of the plants.
To identify the viral agents, leaf samples were analyzed by biological tests, E.M. observations and molecular assays.
Mechanical inoculations of field sample extracts on herbaceous indicator plants (Chenopodium quinoa, Gomphrena globosa, Nicotiana clevelandii) and E.M. observations confirmed the presence of viral agents, often in mixed infection whereas one-step-RT-PCR was applied to identify AMCV, AILV and ALV in considered samples.
The viruses were found to be present in analyzed samples, with different percentages of infection.
