´APOLLO´, A NEW VERY ATTRACTIVE MEDIUM - EARLY ARTICHOKE CULTIVAR

Authors:   G. Zuccherelli, P. Papalini, V. Capaccio
Keywords:   Cynara scolymus L., cultivar, genetic improvement
Abstract:
‘Apollo’ is a ‘Romanesco’-like variety, obtained from seed, characterized by medium–earliness, producing 8-9 very good looking large capitula. Capitula have fleshy bracts, compact hearts, a very small inner cavity and limited production of hair. ‘Apollo’ is harvested when the lateral capitula of the ‘Romanesco’ clone ‘C3 Vitroplant’ are harvested. That means that we can widen the period of yield of high quality capitula ‘Romanesco’-like beyond ‘C3 Vitroplant’ production. ‘Apollo’ is very good to eat both fresh and cooked; because of its capitulum shape it is particularly suitable for the traditional roman recipes.
