Abstract:
The ‘Spinoso violetto di Palermo’ artichoke has a small head, the exterior bracts are green with shades of violet.
Production begins at the end of November and finishes in the month of April.
In Menfi and in other surrounding areas, in the province of Agrigento, the artichoke ‘Spinoso violetto di Palermo’ holds a prominent position, both in terms of cultivated surface (40% of 700 hectares of artichokes growing) and of income and caters for the request of the island’s market.
Cultivation is especially spread in self-organized farms.
The object of this work was to verify the profitability of the productive process.
The method followed was the cost analysis (1998/99) and of the Gross Sealable Output (GSO) during two reference years (1997/98 and 1998/99), over a sample of fifteen farms representing the area.
The production cost resulted to be about 7.5 million of Lit/ha.
The highest costs are labour (40.5 %) and technical means (28.8 %).
The average production is 30,000 small head per hectare and the GSO is 10.1 million lire per hectare.
The profit proved to be positive with 2.7 million of Lit/ha, but it was influenced by the market price trend.
