ATROPHIC HEAD FORMATION AND EARLINESS IN GLOBE ARTICHOKE PRODUCTION

Authors:   G. Koçer, B. Eser
Keywords:   Globe artichoke, awakening irrigation, GA3 applications
Abstract:
Atrophy is an important problem which causes unmarketable head formation in artichoke productions, particularly for early varieties. Forcing plants to earliness is limited due to this problem. In this experiment, we tested the effects of timing of the first irrigation and GA3 applications on yield distribution and atrophic head formation at the plants which were in various ages. In the first year of the experiment, plants which were 1, 2 and 3 years old, were awakened in the first and the last week of August. In the second year of the experiment, plants that were 1, 2, 3 and 4 years old were awakened in the first week of August and GA3, 30 ppm in concentration, was applied once to one group and twice to the other group. Then early yield and the rate of atrophic heads were assessed. As a result, it was seen that the rate of atrophic head was 15-26 % when the plants were awakened in the first week of August. In the second year, the rate was about 4-19 % in the GA3 applied plants. It was also found that the rate of head atrophy increased with increases in plant age. Relations between the factors tested and head atrophy are discussed.
