Abstract:
Higher yields and improvement of the quality of the product has been often attributed to the appropriate contribution of water and nutriments.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of two ways of irrigation combined with two kinds of fertilization, applied to artichoke (Cynara cardunculus, var scolymus. L, cv.
Violet d’Hyères): furrow irrigation with spreading fertilization, drip irrigation also with spreading fertilization and fertilizing drip irrigation (fertigation).
The experiment was conducted at the experimental station of I.N.R.G.R.E.F in Cherfech, Tunisia, on a deep clay soil and in the rain-free period of 1997-1998 seasons.
The water soil moisture was followed with neutrons probe and the amount of the water needs was estimated by the daily ET0 (Penman-Monteith) formula.
Higher yields of artichoke were obtained with the fertirrigation mode, with an increase of 16% and 71% respectively compared to drip irrigation and furrow irrigation.
The average of head artichoke product by plant was also better for localized irrigation, with 8.3 head/plant for fertirrigation, 7head/plant for drip irrigation against 4.95head/plant for furrow irrigation.
On the other hand, the water use efficiency (WUE) was improved by localized irrigation, with 27 kg/mm for the fertirrigation and 24.19 kg/mm for the drip irrigation and only 18.63 kg/mm for furrow irrigation.
