ISHS Acta Horticulturae 68: International Symposium on Flower Formation in Ornamentals

TRIALS ON CHEMICAL CONTROL OF FLOWERING IN ORNAMENTAL BROMELIADS

Authors:   T. Eccher, I. Lamiani Mignani
Abstract:
Trials on flower induction of Aechmea fasciata were made to compare the effects of two products, BOH and CEPA, and to study the possibility of using them during winter months.

In our conditions (prov. of Milan), CEPA treated plants proved to be less affected by winter shortage of light than BOH treated ones: foliar sprays with CEPA 2000 ppm, carried out in November, December and January, induced flowering of two years old plants in more than 90% cases. No flower was ill-formed or badly developed in CEPA treated plants, contrary to BOH treated ones.

Flower induction trials are supported by microscopical investigations on flower bud differentiation, to determine the time elapsing between chemical treatment and appearance of flower primordia.
