Abstract:
Traditionally, education in basic and applied natural sciences has focused on the acquisition and reproduction of important basic facts. This is also true for the horticultural program at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences at Alnarp. However, this approach towards acquiring knowledge is not consistent with the demands made by later professional occupation, regardless of the choice of career. A survey of students and selected teachers revealed that there was a need for the integration of basic facts towards synthesis, as neither the students’ approach towards an unknown subject or the teachers’ awareness of the expected abilities and requirements of a horticulturist matched the requirements of professional employment. Therefore, a multidisciplinary horticultural colloquia was introduced. The goal is to train students to integrate basic facts to a higher level of complexity and to extrapolate from the known to the unknown. This is achieved by a three-step approach, i.e. introduction to a broad subject, set-up of relevant strategies and a case study. This paper outlines teachers’ reflections about and a general approach towards the multidisciplinary horticultural colloquium, clarified by an example.
