Abstract:
Comparative estimates carried out on the US turfgrass industry suggest that the Australian turfgrass industry may well cover some 1.1M hectares, contribute some $AUD5.0B in maintenance costs and employ some 80,000 people.
In addition, an estimated $AUD3.5B may be spent on turf related businesses and services, $AUD104M on turfgrass sod, $AUD100M on turfgrass seed, as well as having an estimated payroll of more than $AUD300M annually going back into the economy.
The value, extent and range of employment opportunities in turf management require competent, knowledgeable staff at both higher education and vocational training levels that can progress the industry into the 21st century.
Currently, turf management education and training is available in Australia through TAFE and the University system as well as private providers.
Qualifications range from TAFE National Certificates 1-6 through to Advanced Diplomas and baccalaureate programs through to postgraduate studies.
Recent studies undertaken by the US turfgrass industry reinforce the need for a continual updating of turfgrass curriculum and for teaching staff to keep abreast with changing science and technology.
From the Australian perspective, there is a need for balance in developing education and training programs, for greater industry involvement in these programs and the need to develop a formal career structure.
