Abstract:
The Prairie Horticulture Certificate (PHC) is a distance education, non-credit diploma-level, consortium-based program that had its official launch in November 1994. The consortium, which includes four prairie institutions (Assiniboine Community College, University of Manitoba, Olds College, and the University of Saskatchewan), was the first of its kind to link universities and colleges under one horticulture program in Canada.
The PHC was initiated in response to student demand for a home-study program in which plant and course material more closely reflected the prairie environment than the existing Ontario Diploma in Horticulture.
The PHC curriculum includes 4 core courses and 4 elective streams (Landscaping and Arboriculture; Greenhouse Crop Production; Fruit and Vegetable Production; and Nursery Crop Production). Each consortium institution develops a set of courses that are then shared.
To date, there have been over two thousand PHC course registrations with a peak yearly enrolment of 278 students in the year 2000. However, in order to evaluate curriculum and program success, determine future areas of emphasis and direction, comprehensive student surveys were undertaken.
