Abstract:
In late 2000, a three-year innovative project, ‘Partnerships in Tasmanian Primary Industry Science Education’ was commenced by the School of Agricultural Science (SAS) at the University of Tasmania (UTas) with funds from the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST). Funding had been sought to address the shortage of appropriately educated science graduates seeking work in primary industry and to increase the participation of industry in the solution of this issue.
The three main programs within the ‘Partnerships in Tasmanian Primary Industry Project’ focus on the key areas of concern to the project: (1) university/school/industry initiatives to encourage senior secondary students to pursue tertiary science courses that relate to primary industry; (2) improved teaching resources and flexibility of delivery of university courses; and (3) industry participation in professional development in university accredited short courses for industry personnel.
While these three main programs are covered in this paper, other aspects of the DEST/UTas program can be found in a report by Russell (2004).
