Abstract:
A case study was made in Swarnapatna block of Koenjhar district of Orissa, India on conservation, cultivation and awareness promotion on medicinal plants.
The medicinal uses of 33 important plant species used by the Bhuyan, Bhumija and Juang tribes based on field survey have been reported with a view to demonstrate the richness of biological diversity of the area.
The concept of sustainable utilization of medicinal plants and their cultivation on commercial scale were inculcated in to the minds of the tribals through community participation, training, financial and technological incentives, close interaction, practical demonstration and regular awareness campaigns with the involvement of tribal village heads, medicine men, NGOs, forest officials, tribal development agencies and subject experts.
The programme also aims at providing alternative sources of income and self-employment to tribal people of the region through sustainable utilization of natural resources.
