Abstract:
The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana has been assigned the responsibility to generate technologies in the field of Horticulture i.e. cultivation of Fruits, Vegetables and Flowers. These technologies are disseminated to the farmers through extension scientists of the PAU and the State Department of Horticulture. The research projects are formulated in the concerned departments, on the basis of field situations and the scientists keeping in view the objectives of the projects generate the data. The data are critically evaluated at the departmental research committees and is sent for consideration to the Research Evaluation Committee (REC) of the University headed by the Director of Research. Keeping in view the conclusions drawn, necessary recommendations are made to the extension scientists to test the performance of these technologies at the farmers’ fields. The data so generated by the extension scientists is resubmitted to the REC for its consideration and making conclusions. After the REC's approval, the technologies are discussed at a wider scale in the Horticultural Officers’ Workshop, wherein the scientists and the extension scientists of PAU and State Department of Horticulture discuss critically. The innovations approved in the Workshop, are included in the Package of Practices/Recommendations. Thereafter, the technologies are disseminated to the farmers of the state through the extension network for adoption. Necessary provision of inputs required for the adoption of these technologies is made by the State Department of Horticulture. The shortcomings faced by the farmers in adoption are brought to the notice of the scientists through the extension workers. This feedback is further refined by the research system of the University to find out the solutions. The modified technologies are processed for recommendations to the farmers in the same manner at various stages as explained earlier. This is a never-ending process.
