Abstract:
Pakistan has a moderately big horticultural industry. At present there are more than two dozens commercially produced fruits, a similar number of vegetable crops and a rapidly developing floriculture. In horticultural sector the total production is little over 10 million tons annually. The average production of various crops ranges between 8-10 tons per hectare. For the improvement of the sector there is an infra structure for education at various levels i.e. university, vocational schools, research institutes and a set up of agriculture extension for education of the growers. There are four agricultural universities in the country with a mandate of teaching and to conduct basic research. The degrees awarded are B.Sc. (Hons) Agri., M.Sc. (Hons) Agri., and Ph.D. in Horticulture. The Universities are semi-autonomous bodies under the provincial government. The research institutes are there at provincial as well as federal level. There is no separate extension system in horticulture but it works under mainstream of agriculture extension system for educating the farmers and passing on the research findings to them. These three components of the system are however, independent and unfortunately less coordinated.
