INFORMATION SERVICE AND VOLUNTARY INSPECTION OF GREENHOUSE SPRAYERS

Authors:   E. Goossens, B. Sonck
Keywords:   horticulture, evaluation, test protocol, operator safety, plant protection
Abstract:
More wholesale buyers of horticultural produce are imposing demands on the sprayers used by growers. Purchasers perceive a vital link between well-maintained sprayers and food safety. Since previous research indicated that some commonly used sprayers were in poor condition, CLO-DVL instigated a project on sprayers in glasshouses. A test procedure was formulated to evaluate sprayers under practical working conditions. The test procedure and the testing itself enabled CLO-DVL to inform growers about existing deficiencies or necessary improvements. During the demonstration and information sessions, growers were instructed in how to use, maintain and calibrate their sprayers in the best possible way. Alternative spraying techniques were mentioned. Safety while spraying and handling plant protection products were emphasized as well. An inquiry was conducted to gather more information on the most frequently used techniques and on the problems dealt with in the different sectors of horticulture. The first results of the evaluations and the inquiry make it clear that many growers have benefited from improving their sprayers.
