NEW CONCEPTIONS AND APPROACHES FOR EFFECTIVE CURRICULUM PLANNING IN HORTICULTURE EDUCATION

Authors:   A. Chandel, R.S. Chandel

Abstract:
Effective planning is a basic requirement for making a profession successful and worldwide viable. In educational vocabulary, the content of university education is termed as curriculum. Consequently, determination of the curriculum in horticultural institutions is a very serious undertaking. Any curriculum has to be developed according to certain educational goals of society as well as qualification demands in the professional work field for its effective adoption worldwide. The reality of life in society and the reality of job in the present horticulture work field are a different world than the world of education and institution. The teaching quality of institution and characteristics of graduates depend to a great extent on mobilizing teacher’s interest, commitment and enthusiasm to deal with this task. Planned curriculum gives a clear understanding of both the students who is the target of our course and the requirement of the professional field where he will work. There will always be a question as in what ways has the curriculum been successful? The overview to curriculum development also shows that evaluation is not confined to testing of the students but also applies to possible faults in the planning and implementation of the curriculum. Hence for internationalization of horticulture course, curriculum development may not remain a linear process that flows smoothly from one stage to next but becomes an interactive process that involves working back and forth. The system view of institution will provide an adequate background and basis for dealing with curriculum development and course design. The curriculum development must be understood as a cyclic process related to changes in the professional field of horticulture. The broad gap between tasks and abilities to be performed at the work place and the qualifications that can be obtained in institution must be overcome through effective development of curriculum.
