Abstract:
A progress report on orchard trials of new quince and Pyrus rootstock clones currently planted at East Malling Research, UK and at sites in France, Italy and Spain is given.
The dwarfing quince rootstock clone C132 which had previously shown potential in preliminary trials undertaken in the UK and the Netherlands some years ago continues to show promise as a rootstock slightly more dwarfing than EMC, with similar yield efficiency and fruit size.
Another quince clone, EMH (QR193/16), induces similar or slightly greater vigour than EMC at most sites.
In preliminary trials at East Malling, EMH increased fruit size of ‘Conference’. In the trials reported here EMH also increased fruit size of ‘Concorde’ and ‘Comice’ in some seasons but this effect was somewhat inconsistent from season to season and site to site.
EMH has proved to be an excellent rootstock for the cv.
Concorde.
One new Pyrus rootstock clone of intermediate vigour, QR708/36, is exhibiting good yield efficiency in several trials in progress in the UK.
