| Abstract:
Potatoes are among the ten most important food crops in the world. Aeroponics would appear to have a number of potential attributes to make potato production more efficient. It appears that vegetative methods of propagation will dominate commercial potato production, and aeroponics has the potential to eliminate all but 1 generation of seed potato multiplication in the field thus lowering costs and raising the plant health quality of the first field production generation. Aeroponics also offers the opportunity of producing gourmet “early” potatoes year round. Furthermore aeroponics offers the opportunity to determine the precise fertilizer requirements for the crop, and thus increase productivity (using drip fertigation), reduce fertilizer usage, and reduce the risk of excessive fertilizer residues moving into the subterranean water table. | |
