Abstract:
In the indexing of apple trees on 'Virginia Crab', symptoms resembling Virginia decline appeared to a large extent. 17 of the 62 trees indexed were latent carriers of the agent which induces Virginia decline.
It was shown the Virginia decline must be caused by an agent different from rubbery wood mycoplasma, stem pitting virus and probably also from stem grooving virus.
