EXPERIENCES WITH SEVERAL INDICATORS FOR THE PEAR VEIN YELLOW VIRUS AND A COMPARISON BETWEEN PEAR VEIN YELLOWS AND QUINCE SOOTY RING SPOT SYMPTOMS

Author:   W. van Katwijk
Abstract:
From numerous tests and observations it became clear that neither Doyenné du Comice nor Beurré Hardy were reliable indicators for the Pear Vein Yellows Virus. In comparative trials with many varieties the varieties Curé and Jules d'Airolles appeared to be the most reliable indicators. As the symptoms in Jules d'Airolles become masked rather quickly by seasonal influences later in the season and those in Curé remain constant Curé seems preferable as indicator for the Pear Vein Yellows Virus.

Additional tests with Pyronia veitchii and Quince C 7/1 have given strong indication that Pear Vein yellows and Quince Sooty Ringspot are caused by two different viruses.
