| Abstract:
In 1968, East Mailing and Long Ashton Research Stations began distributing virus-free EMLA scionwood trees and rootstocks to Special Stock nurseries. In 1974 the two research stations began re-testing these trees for most known graft-transmissible diseases. A total of 2 855 scionwood trees and 3 871 rootstock samples are being tested. The results so far have indicated no spread into apples and pears. Plum pox was found at one nursery where all plums have since been destroyed. Little cherry disease was detected in some sweet cherries, but this infection probably originated in the rootstocks as some infected F12/I were found at East Malling. | |
