POSSIBLE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CAUSAL AGENT OF DAPPLE APPLE AND SCAR SKIN |

| Abstract:
Reactions of four apple cultivars to viruses causing dapple apple (DA) and scar skin (SC) were studied. Healthy 15-year old Starking Delicious, Jonathan, Indo, and Ralls Janet trees were inoculated by top-grafting of diseased scion on 12 May, 1972. Symptoms which appeared on fruits were observed and compared for three years after inoculation. Suitable control trees were also included in these experiments. In current fruiting season after inoculation, fruits produced on the four cultivars did not show any symptoms. One year after inoculation, fruits of each cultivar reacted with different symptom types to each inoculum. However, two and three years after inoculation, symptom types of fruits were the same irrespective of inoculum within each cultivar, although differences were observed between cultivars. From these results, a close relationship between the causal agent of dapple apple and of scar skin was suggested. This is, however, not yet conclusive until attempts to isolate the causal virus and to back-transmit to apple are accomplished. | |
