THE DETECTION OF PLANT VIRUSES BY ENZYME-LINKED IMMUNOSORBENT ASSAY (ELISA)

Authors:   M.F. Clark, A.N. Adams, D.J. Barbara
Abstract:
A new and highly sensitive serological procedure is described in which enzyme-labelled antibodies are used for detecting plant viruses. Arabis mosaic virus and plum pox virus were detected in purified preparations at concentrations of 30 ng/ml and 1 ng/ml, respectively. These viruses were also detected directly in unclarified leaf homogenates of herbaceous hosts and of woody crop plants. Colourimetric determination of the strength of the reactions enabled virus concentrations in the test samples to be estimated. The advantages of this procedure over conventional serological techniques, and some potential applications, are discussed.
