INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION ON PLANT VIRUS RESEARCH WITH SPECIAL REGARD TO FRUIT TREE VIRUSES |

| Abstract:
It has been stated that it would seems necessary to treble the production of food in the next generation, if mankind is not to suffer from starvation in a even more catastrophic way than to day. Here much can be done in the field of plant protection, and the virologists certainly have a great responsibility in this respect. As you all are aware, plant protection is not solely a matter of the individual country, on the contrary, a world wide struggle against plant diseases and pests can only be effectively performed, in so far all nations are prepared to cooperate. Such co-operation have certainly taken place for several years, and I shall now briefly describe some of the international work carried out with special emphasis on plant viruses. In doing so I would like to divide this work into two parts, firstly some of the work carried out on more or less compulsory basis, and secondly the work performed on voluntary basis. | |
