HOP MOSAIC VIRUS AND APPLE MOSAIC VIRUS SUSCEPTIBILITY OF HOP (HUMULUS LUPULUS L.) GERMPLASM IN POLAND

Author:   U. Skomra
Keywords:   ELISA, cultivar field resistance, mechanical inoculation
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine the degree of Hop mosaic virus (HpMV) and Apple mosaic virus (ApMV) susceptibility of hop cultivars and selection of the resistance ones as parents in breeding work.
Research was performed in the years 2001-2003. The collection of hop cultivars is held in the field and includes 204 hop cultivars from Europe, Asia, Australia and North America.
HpMV and ApMV was detected using ELISA test in leaves collected in May from hop plants growing in the field. The presence of viruses was confirmed in the plants of 178 (87.3%) of the hop cultivars. The HpMV and ApMV were found in the plants of 140 and 104 hop cultivars respectively. Only 26 cultivars showed no virus infection in field conditions. These cultivars were evaluated for their susceptibility to HpMV and ApMV in the greenhouse by mechanical inoculation and subsequent detection of HpMV and ApMV by ELISA. From 26 hop cultivars –17 became infected with HpMV and 16 with ApMV. Five cultivars: ‘Czemierczewskij’, ‘Krylatskij’, ‘Podwiaznyj’, ‘Sumier’ and ‘Zwienigowskij’ which derive from Russia remained virus free.
