FUSARIUM CONE TIP BLIGHT OF HUMULUS LUPULUS

Authors:   J.C. Bienapfl, C.M. Ocamb, R. Klein, M. Nelson
Keywords:   Hop, disease
Abstract:
A necrosis at the tip of hop cones was observed in Oregon on Humulus lupulus 'Nugget' in the 1990’s. Fusarium sambucinum and F. avenaceum were recovered from symptomatic cones. Studies were carried out to examine pathogenicity and demonstrate Koch’s postulates for cone tip blight using isolates of F. avenaceum and F. sambucinum. ‘Nugget’ and ‘Willamette’ cones were collected on three dates and inoculated with spore suspensions of F. avenaceum and F. sambucinum at concentrations of 102, 104, and 106 conidia/ml to examine dosage effects. Necrosis was evaluated 2, 4, 6, and 8 days after inoculation. Fusarium avenaceum and F. sambucinum caused cone necrosis and a dosage response was observed. Both Fusarium species were recovered from symptomatic cones.
