OUTBREAK OF THE LETHAL FORM OF HOP WILT IN SLOVENIA: MONITORING SURVEY AND DIAGNOSTIC RESEARCH

Abstract:
In 1997, an outbreak of the lethal form of hop wilt was registered in the western part of the Savinja Valley and Verticillium albo-atrum was identified as the infection agent. Over the next six years, the disease spread rapidly and caused considerable economic losses on almost 180 ha of hop gardens. To prevent further spread, a monitoring survey was performed and strict phytosanitary measures were taken in all infected areas. The appearances of mild and lethal hop wilt forms in Slovene hop growing areas required the characterisation of field isolates. Pathogenicity tests and AFLP molecular analysis determined two groups of V. albo-atrum hop isolates, which indicates the appearance of a new, more virulent hop pathotype. In addition, identified pathotype linked AFLP markers were successfully sequenced and converted into sequence characterized amplified (SCAR) diagnostic markers.
