Abstract:
Sweet cherry breeding was begun in Hungary by Sándor Brozik more than half of a century ago.
The major objectives are been to broaden the range of ripening times, improve fresh and processed fruit quality, increase disease resistance, and develop self-fertile varieties.
From this program, 5 genotypes have been added to the Hungarian National Growing List: `Margit’, `Linda’, ‘Katalin’, ‘Kavics’, and ‘Alex®’. An additional 8 genotypes have been submitted recently for registration, three of which (`Péter’, ‘Sándor’, and ‘Pál’) are self-fertile.
The ripening period now extends nearly 8 weeks, from mid-May to mid-July.
