| Abstract:
Considerable progress in training system and rootstock research has occurred in Hungary over the last decade. The planting of medium or high density orchards is now possible. Hungarian rootstock research has developed vegetatively-propagated mahaleb rootstocks that are useful in high density orchards with sandy soils. Based on our experiences with the Brunner-, Zahn- and Vogel-spindle training systems in Hungary, two new systems, the modified Brunner-spindle and the slender spindle, were developed and already are being adopted for new orchards. Both use pruning elements developed by Brunner, Zahn and Vogel. For semi-intensive orchards, the modified Brunner spindle is recommended; for intensive orchards, the slender spindle system is recommended. | |
