ROOTSTOCKS AFFECT LEAF MINERAL COMPOSITION AND FRUIT QUALITY OF 'LAPINS' SWEET CHERRY

Abstract:
The effects of rootstock on sweet cherry leaf mineral composition (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo and Zn) was studied in 'Lapins' grafted on ten different rootstocks: F12/1, Gisela 4, Gisela 5, Gisela 12, MaxMa 14, Piku 1 (Pi-Ku 4.20), Tabel Edabriz, Weiroot 13, Weiroot 72 and Weiroot 158. Rootstock genotype influenced the leaf concentrations of N, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn and Zn. The highest influence of rootstock was observed with respect to P, K, Mg, and Fe. Rootstock also influenced ‘Lapins’ yield and fruit weight. The highest yields were on Gisela 12 and Gisela 5 (~4 to 5 kg/tree) and lowest on F12/1 (<0.2 kg/tree). Mean fruit size was greatest on Piku 1, Gisela 4, and Gisela 12, and smallest on MaxMa 14 and Tabel Edabriz. Fruit sugars (sucrose, glucose, and fructose), sugar alcohols (sorbitol), and organic acids (malic, shikimic, and fumaric) were determined by HPLC. Rootstock genotype affected the concentrations of individual sugars in the ‘Lapins’ fruits; however, the greatest influence was on organic acid concentrations. Fruits from trees on Gisela 5 and Edabriz had the highest sugar:acid ratios, and those from trees on Weiroot 158 had the lowest ratios.
