Abstract:
One Australian organic orchard is successfully growing commercial quantities of lychee (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) and rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum Linn.). The market for organic products is currently one of the fastest growing markets in the world.
FAO has identified the need for research into the organic production of tropical fruits including lychees and rambutans.
Lychees and rambutans are grown organically in Australia.
Best practice in organic soil nutrition, weed, pest and disease management allows organic farmers to produce high yields of quality fruit.
The use of insectary plants and other organic control methods has resulted in a significant reduction in insect pests and diseases.
IPM scouting surveys show that the organic farm has the least number of insect pest species.
Soil tests show that soil fertility is constantly increasing.
Yields are increasing and becoming more reliable.
The fruits are of export quality and have been successfully exported to Japan, Hong Kong, London and Singapore.
