Abstract:
Fruit abscission pattern of 15 lychee cultivars clearly indicated that cultivars ‘Deshi’, ‘Early Large Red’, ‘Elaichi’, ‘Kasba’, ‘Muzaffarpur’, ‘Nafarpal’, ‘Rose Scented’ and ‘Seedless Late’ showed two waves of fruit abscission whereas cultivars ‘Bedana’, ‘Bombai’, ‘China’, ‘Early Mazaffarpur’, ‘McLean’, ‘Piazi’ and ‘Purbi’ exhibited three waves of fruit abscission. ‘Bedana’, ‘China’ and ‘Seedless Late’ were aborted-seeded cultivars of which ‘Bedana’ and ‘China’ showed three waves of abscission and ‘Seedless Late’ showed only two waves of fruit abscission.
A pre-harvest fruit abscission was observed in the aborted-seeded ‘Bedana’ and ‘China’ and normal-seeded ‘Bombai’, ‘Early Muzaffarpur’, ‘McLean’, ‘Piazi’ and ‘Purbi’. The first wave of fruit abscission (the period of maximum drop) was observed during the first two-three weeks after fruit set in all the cultivars.
The maximum rate of abscission between seven and 14 days after full bloom was noted in ‘McLean’ (24.3%/day) compared with the lowest rate of 8.5%/day in ‘Early Muzaffarpur’. The period of occurrence of second wave of fruit abscission varied among the cultivars was noted between third and fifth weeks in some cultivars and fourth and seventh weeks after full bloom in others.
The third wave of fruit abscission was observed at one to two weeks before harvest.
