Abstract:
Sixty lychee cultivars, one longan cultivar and one tentative natural intergeneric hybrid of lychee and longan were used as materials to study their genetic relationships.
A phylogenetic tree was constructed based on 470 RAPD loci amplified from 30 random primers.
According to clustering analysis, the 62 accessions could be classified into five groups, three of which were lychee accessions.
These three groups were found to be corresponding to the traits of extremely early, early-to-middle maturing and late to extremely late maturing.
This result suggested that the traits of maturation period might be very important in the taxonomy of lychee.
Based on RAPD data, each lychee group could be further divided into sub-groups, which are coincident with the traits of the fruit size, flavor quality and leaf morphology.
This study also revealed some mistakes in the denomination of cultivars.
Four pairs of cultivars were found to be synonymous, although they have been regarded as different cultivars for a long time in China.
