Abstract:
In situ approach involves the maintenance of genetic diversity at the original location, either in the wild or in traditional farming systems. A strong national program of genetic resources conservation has existed in Vietnam since the 1990s. The programme began with ex situ conservation techniques. Currently there are 77 lychee accessions being maintained in the field genebanks of the country. This portrays that in situ conservation of wild crop relatives in their natural habitat and crop species in traditional farming systems has become an important component of many national plant genetic resource programmes. The project "In situ Conservation of Native Landraces and Their Wild Relatives" aims to maintain the wild crop genetic resources in their natural habitats in Vietnam. The highest priority has been given to globally significant species related to crops, and these include the species in the gene pool of native lychee and wild relatives such as Litchi chinensis, Nephelium lappaceum, N. cuspidatum and other important tropical fruit tree species. In this paper, the various methodologies of eco-geographical surveys and inventories; selection strategies of target species and gene management zones (GMZs); methodologies for lychee conservation, management and monitoring plan for genetic diversity of target species in selected GMZs; the participatory market analysis and socio-economic study for native lychee and their wild relatives are discussed.
