ISHS Acta Horticulturae 665: II International Symposium on Lychee, Longan, Rambutan and other Sapindaceae Plants

GENETIC IMPROVEMENT OF LYCHEE IN AUSTRALIA

Authors:   T. Dixon, D. Batten, C. McConchie
Abstract:
Reciprocal controlled crosses were performed between several lychee cultivars in one of the cultivar arboretums so the opportunity was taken to create extra progeny between cultivars with exceptional fruit size, colour or small seed characteristics. The majority of the seedling trees came into production within three years when planted in subtropical and tropical conditions. Most of the hybrids are exhibiting different growth, shape and leaf characteristic. Among the flowering trees, one notable performer at three years of age produced about 32 kg of fruits, with individual fruits around 35-45 g. The resulting fruits and seeds were retained to form the basis of a small lychee-breeding program.
