RESPONSE OF PROCESSING AND FRESH-MARKET ONIONS TO DRIP IRRIGATION

Abstract:
The response of yield to surface-and-subsurface drip irrigation was investigated for both processing and fresh-market onions (Allium cepa L.). Irrigation treatments consisted of water applications ranging from 60% to 120% of a baseline amount (assumed to equal 100% of the potential evapotranspiration) for both irrigation methods. Data collected were applied water, yield, soluble solids (processing onions), grade size by weight (fresh-market onions), canopy coverage, canopy temperature, and soil moisture content. Results showed total yield to increase linearly with increasing amount of applied water for processing onions and for the colossal and jumbo grades of the fresh-market onions. Little response to applied water was found for the medium and repack grades. No difference in the yield-applied water relationship was found between surface-and-subsurface drip irrigation.
