ISHS Acta Horticulturae 663: XI Eucarpia Symposium on Fruit Breeding and Genetics

THE LONG AND TORTUOUS PATH FROM THE LEAF PIECE TO THE GENETICALLY ENGINEERED APPLE TREE

Author:   V. Hanke
Keywords:   Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Malus sp., transformation, fire blight, apple scab
Abstract:
A six years research program was focused on the development of Agrobacterium tumefaciens–mediated gene transfer in commercially grown apple scion and rootstock cultivars. Different Agrobacterium strains were used as well as a range of 8 different gene constructs to increase resistance to apple scab, mildew and fire blight. The transgenic lines were evaluated on the molecular level and for disease resistance in vitro and in the greenhouse. From this research 170 transgenic apple lines of 7 apple genotypes were produced for further evaluation under natural conditions.
