INHERITANCE OF TOLERANCE TO THE ROSY APPLE APHID OF THE CV. 'FLORINA'

Abstract:
The inheritance of the tolerance response of ‘Florina’ to the rosy apple aphid (RAA) Dysaphis plantaginea Pass. was tested in the greenhouse after infestation with adult apterae of two progenies. The progenies were raised from crosses of ‘Florina’ with two local cider cultivars: ‘Raxao’ (34 hybrids carrying the Vf gene for resistance to scab Venturia inaequalis) and ‘Perico’ (93 hybrids, some with the Vf gene). The objectives were (1) to select tolerant hybrids, (2) to study the inheritance of the RAA tolerance from ‘Florina’ and (3) to verify the independence of RAA tolerance and Vf scab resistance. Fifteen (44.1%) ‘Raxao’ x ‘Florina’ and 26 (28.0%) ‘Perico’ x ‘Florina’ descendants did not show the typical deformations caused by the RAA and were considered tolerant. The proportions of susceptible/tolerant hybrids were not significantly different from 1:1 and 3:1, respectively. These results suggest that inheritance of RAA tolerance from ‘Florina’ could be explained by a hypothesis involving two genes. However, results of other research and the gradient of susceptibility between cultivars suggest a more complex inheritance mechanism. Having studied the tolerance to RAA and resistance to scab in the progeny of ‘Perico’ x ‘Florina’, we conclude that both inheritances were independent.
