Abstract:
The phenylpropanoid pathway leads to the formation of various end products including potential antimicrobial compounds. Its role in resistance of apple to fire blight, a bacterial disease of Maloideae due to Erwinia amylovora was investigated. Gene expression of several enzymes of the pathway was analyzed during the interaction of E. amylovora and apple genotypes with contrasted susceptibility to the disease. According to the patterns obtained, we assume that there is an accumulation in some families of end products in the resistant genotype while no or less accumulation occurred in the susceptible one during the course of the interaction. In addition we demonstrated that the antimicrobial activities against E. amylovora of several phenolics belonging to these families and known to exist in apple. On the whole these results strongly suggest a role of the phenylpropanoid pathway during the interaction of E. amylovora and its host plants. This could be confirmed by the direct quantification of phenolics in tissue challenged with E. amylovora.
