STUDIES ON STORAGE BEHAVIOUR OF LOW CHILLING PLUM CV. SATLUJ PURPLE

Authors:   J.S. Randhawa, G. Singh, H. Kaur
Keywords:   Satluj Purple plum, Ca(NO3)2, pre-harvest, storage
Abstract:
Satluj Purple a low chilling cv. of plum has become quite popular in Punjab. An attempt has been made to study the post-harvest life of this cultivar under cold store conditions (2±1°C and 85-90 RH). For this purpose, pre-harvest sprays of calcium nitrate at 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 per cent were given 3, 2, and 1 week before harvest. Calcium nitrate at 0.4 per cent sprayed 3 weeks before harvest significantly lowered physiological loss in weight and spoilage of fruits up to 30 days during storage. The organoleptic rating and TSS were observed to be the highest with 0.2 per cent calcium nitrate sprayed 3 weeks before harvest. It is concluded that calcium nitrate spray from 0.2-0.4 per cent when applied 3 weeks before harvest proved useful in extending the storage life of plum fruits up to 30 days in cold storage.
