Authors:   Rachna, H. Singh, S.S. Mann
Keywords:   maturity, fruit firmness, specific gravity, pear
Abstract:
The fruits of semi-soft, pear Punjab Nectar took 130 days from fruit set to harvest maturity. The fruit growth (length, diameter and weight) increased from fruit set to harvest maturity in three distinct phases. Fruit volume also increased up to last picking with a corresponding decrease in specific gravity. Fruit firmness in terms of Ib/inch2 decreased rapidly as the fruits reached harvest maturity. TSS increased throughout the fruit development period with corresponding fluctuations in the total acid content of the fruit. The sugars (reducing and total) increased with the advancement of picking season. These studies indicated that the fruit firmness is an important parameter to judge the stage of fruit maturity The various chemical parameters aid in its determination.
