INFLUENCE OF ROOTSTOCKS ON VINE VIGOUR, YIELD AND QUALITY OF GRAPES

Authors:   T.B. Tambe, M.H. Gawade
Keywords:   rootstock, vine vigour, grapes, graft compatibility
Abstract:
A field investigation was carried out to observe the effect of rootstocks viz., Dogridge, Salt Creek, 1613-C, 1616-C and St. George grafted with two commercial varieties viz., Thompson Seedless and Tas-A-Ganesh. The experiment was laid out with Factorial Randomized Block Design and four replications at All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Grapes, M.P.K.V., Rahuri. The rootstocks had significant influence on vine vigour, stionic combination, berry size, yield and quality attributes except length of berry and acidity. Tas-A-Ganesh grafted on Dogridge had significantly highest vine vigour in terms of pruning weight (1522.0 g/vine), scion/stock ratio (0.95) of maximum number of canes per vine (31.84), maximum number of bunches per vine (8.90), length of berry (19.89 mm), diameter of berry (17.18 mm), yield (4.18 kg/vine or 9.28 MT/ha), and TSS (21.84°Brix) and acidity (0.48%). However, these attributes were at par with Thompson Seedless grafted on Dogridge and Tas-A-Ganesh on own root. The interaction effects between rootstocks and varieties had significant influence in respect of pruning weight, girth of scion and stock. It indicated that Tas-A-Ganesh or Thompson Seedless grafted on Dogridge found better for vine vigour, stionic combination, yield and quality characters as compared to the rest of rootstocks. Therefore, Thompson Seedless or Tas-A-Ganesh grafted on Dogridge rootstock is recommended for better vine vigour, yield and quality in grapes.
