EFFECT OF MOISTURE STRESS ON PERFORMANCE OF OWN ROOTED AND GRAFTED VINES OF TAS-A-GANESH (VITIS VINIFERA L.)

Authors:   J. Sharma, A.K. Upadhyay

Abstract:
In the present study 2 year old Tas-A-Ganesh vines grown on their own roots were compared with those grafted on Dogridge (Vitis champini) and 110R (Vitis berlandieri x Vitis rupestris) at three irrigation treatments viz. 50%, 75% and 100% of the recommended irrigation level based upon pan evaporation rate. The vines were raised on Y trellis system. The experiment was conducted for two pruning seasons (one cropping season) in heavy black cotton soil at Pune in Maharastra (India). The irrigation water had an EC of 1.8 dS/m and pH 8.30. The EC (1:2) of the soil was 0.46 dS/m and pH 7.75. The water-soluble chlorides in the soil were 102 ppm. Both the rootstocks produced significantly higher yield and brix yield than own rooted vines at lowest as well as highest level of irrigation (50% of recommended irrigation level and recommended irrigation level). The own rooted vines had less canopy which further affected the quality of the berries due to sunburn. The own rooted vines showed defoliation whereas the leaves of the vines grafted on rootstocks remained intact till the end of the cropping season. The two rootstocks did not differ significantly between themselves in terms of yield and quality at all the levels of irrigation. The EC of the soil at the end of the cropping season increased up to 2.93 dS/m. The results of this study demonstrate the importance of rootstocks for higher productivity and quality of produce under saline and scarce water conditions.
